Dr. Thad Thomas, Scenic
View Estates, has been a dentist for more than 30 years but recently
embarked on a new career.
Thomas has opened an art gallery on U.S. 42, just west of Warsaw, to
display and sell a distinctive form of art he creates called
Shellography.
Thomas makes his prints, most of which are at least 11"x 14" through a
process that incorporates some of the skills he has learned as a
dentist. He first takes a picture of a single shell on dental x-ray
film. He then scans the x-ray into his computer and colors it using
photographic software. The results are unique and often stunning.
I've loved shells and the ocean for as long as I can remember," said
Thomas who has lived in Gallatin County for four years and works in Dry
Ridge. "Shellography has allowed me to take that passion and create
something I think will be fo interest to all kinds of people."
Most of Thomas's prints range in price from $45 to $100 and are either
framed and unframed but matted. As his business grows, he plans to
include other varieties of handcrafted seashell gifts in his gallery.
Thomas has plans to open a dental office in Warsaw but he says that
doesn't mean he won't have enough time for his gallery.
"Shellography has become an important part of my life and this gallery
will always be here," he said.
The Shellography Art Gallery is located at 872 West U.S. 42, and is open
Tues, Wed., Thurs., and Sat. from noon to 6 p.m.
